In this episode

In this episode I sit down with someone very special to me — my daughter and intern, Mackenzie Moore. This is her third time on the podcast, and you all love hearing from her, so I'm thrilled to have her back. Mackenzie is a senior at the University of Arkansas studying international business, and she graduates in December. To say I'm proud of her is an understatement.

We talk about her summer internship in Panama — yes, the country with the Panama Canal, not Florida! — where she was the first student ever to do the program, completely on her own, working in Spanish the whole time for L'Oréal's Central America division. She shares what it was like to step so far outside her comfort zone and why that's exactly where she believes growth happens.

We also get raw and vulnerable about something that matters deeply to her: mental health. Mackenzie opens up about her own years-long struggle, why she finally decided to seek help, and the real, doable things that have made a difference — therapy, finding the right therapist, paying attention to what she puts in her body, sleep, and surrounding herself with good people. Whatever season you're in, I think you'll find something to take away. Keep going — the world really is your oyster.

Key takeaways

  • Getting out of your comfort zone is where real growth happens — it doesn't have to be moving to another country; even a small, slightly scary step counts.
  • Mackenzie's Panama internship with L'Oréal's Central America division immersed her in Spanish daily and gave her hands-on corporate experience analyzing product portfolios and sales for a local drugstore chain.
  • You don't have to know exactly what you want to do — the only way to truly figure it out is to try things and talk to people, because no job is what you imagine until you actually do it.
  • Personal growth is ongoing work; ask yourself how you can move toward the version of yourself you want to be, even in small ways, each day.
  • You have to do things you don't want to do — work, exercise, the hard stuff — because they get you closer to where you want to go.
  • Finding a good therapist is like dating: if one isn't the right fit, that doesn't mean therapy isn't for you. Keep looking until you click.
  • Mental health is whole-life — pay attention to what you put in your body, prioritize sleep, build better phone habits, and surround yourself with positive people.
I'm a firm believer that doing anything outside of your comfort zone is where you grow.
The only way to figure that out truly is to just try things. Talk to people. Try things. Because you truly don't know what a job is gonna be until you do it.
A lot of people think that if you try a therapist and you don't like them, then therapy in general is not for you when it really is probably just that therapist. So keep going.
How do I visualize myself in five years, and how am I gonna work toward it today?
