In this episode
In this episode I sit down with Evie Blair, president and founder of Synergy Benefit Advisors. I first met Evie when she started showing up to some of my women's events in the Tulsa area, and over lunch I got to know her heart for what she does. And yes — people really can be passionate about insurance! Evie's story isn't a straight line. She dreamed of owning her own company at 20, set a ten-year goal, and ended up launching it at 30. That long-burning desire to build something of her own — and to make a positive impact on both her employees and her clients — is what got her here.
We talk about what it actually looks like to take the hassle out of a complicated industry. Evie shares the "duck on the water" analogy — calm on top, paddling hard underneath — and a real story of fighting a $30,000 heart-monitor claim down to a $2,000 deductible by getting the cardiologist and the insurance carrier talking to each other. That's the kind of behind-the-scenes work her clients don't always see, and it's where her servant's heart really shows.
We also get into the things I love asking about: where she finds joy, how she stokes the fire when the daily grind sets in, the give-back work her office does with Sky High for Kids, and her honest take on balance as a business owner and a mom. Her formula for thriving — hard work plus consistency plus discipline plus patience — is simple, doable, and worth sitting with. Keep going, friend.
Key takeaways
- Your path doesn't have to be straight. Evie set a ten-year goal at 20 and launched her business at 30 — the windy road of entrepreneurship is normal, so keep going.
- When you're weighing a job, look at the whole package, not just the salary. Your benefits are part of your 'hidden paycheck' — an employer's contribution to health insurance, PTO and more can add real dollars to your bottom line.
- Advocacy matters. Evie's team bridged communication between a cardiologist and the insurance carrier to get a $30,000 heart-monitor claim written down to a $2,000 deductible.
- Benefits are a retention tool. Strong, well-explained benefits help companies keep good people and help employees see the full value they're receiving.
- The relationship side is the real fuel. Clients become friends, and that human connection is where the joy and longevity in this work come from.
- A formula for thriving: hard work + consistency + discipline + patience. Apply those to your everyday and you'll be amazed at the results over time.
- Eat the elephant one bite at a time. Slow, steady growth and taking care of your current clients first opens the door to everything else.
“Once you have that fire, you keep that fire. You may just have to continue to stoke that throughout the time if it dies down a little bit.”
“It's basically like a duck pedaling on water. It just seems calm and collected on top, and on the bottom we're pedaling.”
“The passion is a God-given gift. He instills that into you, and that's my belief on that.”
“The best way to eat the elephant is one bite at a time.”
