In this episode

In this episode the tables get turned — I'm the one in the guest seat! David Leifeste, a licensed professional counselor and life coach who I had on the podcast a few episodes back, came over to my home studio and interviewed me. It was such a gift to be on the other side of the microphone, and I have to say, it gave me a little taste of what it might feel like to be coached by David. He's insightful and kind, and I walked away feeling so affirmed in the choices I've made along the way.

We talk about my story — growing up in Stillwater, choosing accounting as a practical, "secure" major even though it never quite fit, and the winding path through auditing at Ernst and Young, recruiting at Robert Half and the University of Tulsa, earning my MBA, and eventually teaching business for over twenty years at Tulsa Community College. From there, fifteen years of writing for Tulsa Kids grew into the "Green Country Grown Up" column and, finally, this podcast.

We also dig into what passion and purpose really mean, why it's okay for your purpose to shift with the seasons, and the everyday practices that keep me going — goal setting, a morning routine, gratitude, and choosing to look at the bright side. If you've ever felt like your path doesn't make sense, I hope our conversation reminds you to keep going and to trust the process from the inside out.

Key takeaways

  • Your "failures" are really just more information. Every role I tried — accounting, auditing, recruiting — taught me something I could leverage into what came next.
  • Watch for the red flags and gut feelings. A yellow-light path (something you can do but that never flows) is worth paying attention to, not pushing through forever.
  • Work from the inside out. I didn't wait for the podcast to be big or perfect to keep going — I let what's fulfilling and meaningful be the reason to continue.
  • Purpose can change with the seasons of your life, and that's okay. Learn to listen when a season is ending.
  • Passion is what lights you up; purpose is what brings fulfillment. When you're using your God-given gifts and talents, the two work together.
  • If you don't know your purpose yet, start by getting to know yourself honestly — through journaling, community, feedback, faith, and new experiences.
  • Write your goals down and break them into weekly and daily steps in a planner. Even five minutes a day adds up over a week, a month, a year.
  • A morning routine of intention, prayer, gratitude, and movement sets the tone for the whole day.
It's a scavenger hunt. We're trying to get clues and cues, but we have to head out on the path.
Passionate people know other passionate people.
I set my intentions for the day before my feet even hit the ground.
I am very goal oriented. When I set a goal, I have to follow through. And I would say positivity would be my secret sauce.
