In this episode I sit down with Doctor Mary Beth Sawyer — known as Doc M.B. — who is on a mission to make health make sense and even make us laugh along the way. I love that combination. Her career spans insurance sales, healthcare consulting, public health, rural health research, and higher education, so she's seen our health care system from just about every angle. Through her podcast, Healthy Humor, she's helping people increase their health literacy, navigate a confusing system, and take ownership of their well-being — with a healthy dose of humor woven in.

We got to connect at a chamber event a while back, and I've loved listening to her show ever since. In our conversation, Doc M.B. opens up about the moment a mentor at TU helped change her trajectory away from med school and toward education and advocacy. We talk about why health literacy matters so much, how to vet who you're really following online, and how she pulls from her theater background to make a scary topic feel a whole lot less scary.

If you've been wanting to start living a little healthier but you don't know where to begin, this one's for you. We get really practical — small, doable steps that don't take much time but add up to real change. Keep going, friend. You can do this.

Key takeaways

  • Health literacy is one of the biggest factors in your long-term health outcomes — the more you understand, the better your decisions and results.
  • Audit who you follow online. Google the content creators giving you health and wellness advice and check whether their background actually backs up what they're claiming.
  • Watch for affiliate motives. If someone never tells you why they're a credible source, that's a red flag worth paying attention to.
  • Start with movement, not a number. The 10,000-steps goal is somewhat arbitrary — focus on simply being less sedentary throughout your day.
  • Tiny habits add up: parking in the back of the lot, taking the stairs, or walking a lap once an hour adds barely any time but a lot to your health.
  • Get a checkup and establish baseline metrics (blood pressure, heart rate, weight). And if you don't like your primary care provider, find a new one.
  • Humor is disarming — making people laugh about hard topics makes health feel more accessible, and it's how Doc M.B. teaches and connects.

If you're not telling me why you're a credible source, you're most likely not going to be one.
Health care is this scary thing, and the whole reason I wanted to make this podcast was to make it less scary.
It's not adding that much to your day, but it's adding a lot to your health.
