In this episode
In this episode I sit down with Alacia Parker, who along with her husband Alex recently opened Pure and Simple Market, a kid-friendly grocery and convenience store in downtown Coweta, Oklahoma. Their idea is such a good one — take the convenience we've all come to expect from modern life and pair it with a simpler, whole-food way of eating, all under one roof. Alacia wants everyone to be able to pronounce their food and know it's whole food, and about half of what's on her shelves comes from local farmers and food entrepreneurs close to home.
What I love is that this isn't just a store — it's a community space. There's a serene, earthy environment with acoustic music and a kids' play area so parents can actually shop, plus events like sensory bin days and story time. Alacia is raw and honest about the messy middle of building something while raising four little ones (ages six, five, four, and two and a half). Her secret weapon? Consistency. Eight months of grocery delivery with no return, showing up on social media, and refusing to quit.
We also talk about how she and Alex divide work and family, why they trust the timing of the ideas God places in their lives, and how she's learning to combine work and family instead of separating them. If you're carrying a big idea you haven't acted on yet, I think Alacia's story will encourage you to keep going.
Key takeaways
- Consistency beats motivation. Alacia ran grocery delivery for eight months with no return before opening the doors — she showed up whether she felt like it or not, because it comes down to discipline, not feelings.
- You can combine work and family instead of separating them. It's messy and it's not easy, and that's okay — she's learned to teach her kids while she gets things done rather than choosing one over the other.
- "I don't do it all" is a healthy answer. Alacia outsources what she can (like house cleaning) and lets the rubber balls drop while protecting the glass ones.
- The path to a successful business looks the same across very different ventures. She and Alex have run several companies, and the ways to succeed carried over even when the businesses had nothing in common.
- Build the experience, not just the product. Pure and Simple Market focuses on a peaceful, earthy, kid-friendly space so grocery shopping actually feels good.
- For local makers wanting on the shelves: keep ingredients simple and pronounceable (no seed oils, no dyes), and know she fills a vendor to capacity before adding a competing product so she can bring them real value.
- Living purposefully means putting systems and processes in place now so you can hand things off later — and being intentional with the time you do have, like family game nights.
“I want everybody to be able to pronounce their food and know that it's whole food.”
“There were so many days I wanted to quit... but we just kept going. Consistency is what kept me through.”
“It's okay that it's messy and not easy.”
“There are the glass balls that you can't let drop in your life and there's the rubber balls that can drop.”
