Take Care of Yourself Now or Be Forced to Later | Episode 255: Jenny Guthrie

In this episode
In this episode I sit down with my friend and former next-door neighbor, Jenny Guthrie, the founder of Glow Medical, recorded live over lunch at The Vault in Tulsa in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Jenny and I go way back, and I love that she showed up ready to be raw and real about all of it — building a business, walking through a cancer diagnosis, and what her faith looked like when it was stretched thin.
Jenny's story is one so many of us can relate to. She went from ICU nurse to nurse practitioner to working for two med spas that fell apart around her — bounced paychecks, an eviction after hours, an autoclave she literally hugged to keep it from being repossessed. In a dark parking lot she made a vow: never again. That vow became Glow, started with five thousand dollars of her own money and built debt-free. Then came a hard season at work, a betrayal, and just weeks later, a lump. On January 3rd she took the phone call at work, cried in the parking lot, and went back in to see patients.
What I love most is Jenny's honesty about "faith fatigue" — the exhaustion of never knowing when the next infection or surgery would come, and the tug-of-war between belief and doubt she lived in. She shares the two verses that carried her, Hebrews 4:16 and Mark 9:24, and the picture of a God who doesn't stand with arms crossed but runs to the battle. There's so much here for every business owner, and a reminder we all need: you will either take care of yourself now or be forced to later. Keep going, friend — this one is worth your time.
Key takeaways
- Build a storehouse before the storm. Jenny started Glow debt-free with $5,000 and saved consistently — which is exactly what let the business survive four months away in 2023 and three months in 2024 during her cancer journey.
- Don't let the dream get small. As Jenny put it, if something can't derail you completely, it will try to make you shrink — out of fear of risk, rejection or failure. Thinking small is its own kind of detour.
- Every business owner faces betrayal. Handle it with forgiveness and firm boundaries — forgiving someone doesn't mean rehiring them or letting them back in.
- Invest in people, not just yourself. A storehouse of talent and a team that stepped up kept Glow running when Jenny couldn't be there.
- Your body will get your attention one way or another. Bleeding gums, high eye pressure, chronic stress and poor sleep were warning signs — cancer, Jenny says, is often a symptom of something deeper going unaddressed.
- Take care of yourself now or be forced to later. You'll invest in your health today or pay for it later; healthy isn't cheap, but neither is the alternative.
- Faith and doubt can live in the same heart. Jenny's honesty about 'faith under severe strain' — and the God who runs to the battle — is freeing for anyone tired of pretending they have it all together.
